Applied Illustration: Summative Evaluation

This module has been really enjoyable. Compared to the other modules this year, I have enjoyed this one the most, purely because I felt the most passionately about the work I was making. Similar to responsive, I found the element of using my illustrations in context to be really exciting, especially in an advertising/branding context. I'm glad I got to explore this area a bit more in a way that I felt comfortable because I feel alot more experienced in making images for a brand. Although I know in the real world the process wouldn't be as straight forward as this, I feel that I have created some illustrations that effectively do what I set out to do.

One of the main turning points in this module for me was the use of collage, which I really enjoyed. When making my images, I wanted to achieve an authenticity that my previous work lacks due to being digitally rendered. In the last module I was urged to use it to start my creative process(mainly because it's quick), and i'm glad I did as It felt really nice to actually have a physical piece of work in front of me aswell, which I have admittedly missed. I am really happy with my final images and think that aswell as translating the brand values of fjallraven visually, I have created illustrations that are bold, eye catching and successful in the context of promotion. I don't feel like there were any major hiccups in this module, and I remained  focused on what I wanted to achieve. I feel I have built up alot of momentum throughout the year in terms of executing an effective project, and feel that I am have learnt alot from my previous mistakes.

In terms of weaknesses in my submission, one occurring problem throughout most modules this year has been my disregard of Ideas without properly exploring them.I am always very conscious of how my project will turn out in the end, and so try to choose the best possible theme for me personally and my way of making images. I think this is really unprofessional and poor use of my time, so this is definitely something I am going to work on. Also in terms of research I feel that I did what was necessary for my initial idea, yet didn’t explore enough for my research to help develop my outcome.

In terms of Time Management, I feel that I managed my time somewhat effectively, having work prepared for each critique, in order to gain feedback and then act upon it. Compared to my initial intentions and ideas, I regret not looking to animation because I feel that it would’ve really pushed my image in an effective direction, making the promotional element of my outcomes more effective. I’m glad that I explored digital platforms however, and especially the Instagram magazine idea, as I think it’s a really new and fresh way for an audience to engage with a brand. When presenting my images, I think I have taken a professional approach, and that they are clear in terms of showing my journey and processes. I think this is evident on my blog also and I have managed to maintain a detailed account of my project as it has progressed.

Overall I feel that because this module has resonated the most with my personal interests, I have submerged myself in it alot more. I’m really glad that my creative process is starting to develop aswell in terms of using new medias, and think that it has had a really positive impact on my final images.

Applied Illustration: Megacrit Feedback

Feedback:
- use of collage and textures works really well.
- Images are so bold and work well in bigger spaces.

- Change the colours for Fitzroy Massif image - they are too warm and create the wrong vibe for this place.

Applied Illustration: Applying My Images / Online Presence

Instagram

This is my mockup of an Instagram Magazine, inspired by the Ballantines Space Glass experience, illustrated by Tom Clohosy Cole.

It would work as one long image, that is posted in segments in order to create a full image. The various segments, each having been posted seperately would give me the oppurtunity to attatch various information, facts and perhaps competitions to each image, creating an interactive element and promoting the brand online in a more effective way. The images work alot better on a larger scale also.

Website

Here I created a banner ad featuring the online instagram experience, urging to people join the adventure, read the magazine and be exposed to various marketing techniques. Compared to the real banner ads, my image fits in really nicely, and is almost refreshing as it has been illustrated, giving it more of a personal touch.

Applied Illustration: Book Design

These are the designs for my final promotional book that I intend to print. I have attempted to create a product that is in keeping with Fjallravens brand aesthetic, using textural graphics to give it an authentic quality. I have researched into the type face that they Fjallraven use in their branding; VAG rounded bold, and Marion. These are key elements in maintaing the image. I also want to remain as in keeping as possible in order to reach out to Fjall Raven's target audience. To reiterate the promotional element of the boo,I have included a page advertising the website, urging the audience to 'join the adventure' - language that I think is quite appropriate to the fun, and lighthearted element of the brand.

Overall I think the layout of the book looks really professional. I'm glad I got a chance to exercise my graphic design skills aswell. The actual written content of the book was sourced from National Geographic, and was used purely to see how my images could look in context. If I was going to make the book, I would approach a journalist in order to use completely original content.

Applied Illustration: Applying My Images

When making the book, my main aim was to ensure that it was Inkeeping with fjallraven's brand aesthetic. I feel like i fully understood what they try to conevy with their graphic design. authentic, classic, scientific feel.
I also used their fonts to remain in keeping with their aesthetic and make my product believable.

Other platforms appropriate to my concept and function:

Buses - Tour bus, guided tour companies for expeditions. In commercial context. Side of bus, whole bus design?

Welcome Signs - Using my images to brand the place they are for.

Compass' - Product Design (unsure about this I feel like it will be very forced, I'll give it a try anyway)

Postcards/travel collectables - keyrings, mugs, coasters? Crap you buy from gift shops.
