Applied Illustration: Summative Evaluation

This module has been really enjoyable. Compared to the other modules this year, I have enjoyed this one the most, purely because I felt the most passionately about the work I was making. Similar to responsive, I found the element of using my illustrations in context to be really exciting, especially in an advertising/branding context. I'm glad I got to explore this area a bit more in a way that I felt comfortable because I feel alot more experienced in making images for a brand. Although I know in the real world the process wouldn't be as straight forward as this, I feel that I have created some illustrations that effectively do what I set out to do.

One of the main turning points in this module for me was the use of collage, which I really enjoyed. When making my images, I wanted to achieve an authenticity that my previous work lacks due to being digitally rendered. In the last module I was urged to use it to start my creative process(mainly because it's quick), and i'm glad I did as It felt really nice to actually have a physical piece of work in front of me aswell, which I have admittedly missed. I am really happy with my final images and think that aswell as translating the brand values of fjallraven visually, I have created illustrations that are bold, eye catching and successful in the context of promotion. I don't feel like there were any major hiccups in this module, and I remained  focused on what I wanted to achieve. I feel I have built up alot of momentum throughout the year in terms of executing an effective project, and feel that I am have learnt alot from my previous mistakes.

In terms of weaknesses in my submission, one occurring problem throughout most modules this year has been my disregard of Ideas without properly exploring them.I am always very conscious of how my project will turn out in the end, and so try to choose the best possible theme for me personally and my way of making images. I think this is really unprofessional and poor use of my time, so this is definitely something I am going to work on. Also in terms of research I feel that I did what was necessary for my initial idea, yet didn’t explore enough for my research to help develop my outcome.

In terms of Time Management, I feel that I managed my time somewhat effectively, having work prepared for each critique, in order to gain feedback and then act upon it. Compared to my initial intentions and ideas, I regret not looking to animation because I feel that it would’ve really pushed my image in an effective direction, making the promotional element of my outcomes more effective. I’m glad that I explored digital platforms however, and especially the Instagram magazine idea, as I think it’s a really new and fresh way for an audience to engage with a brand. When presenting my images, I think I have taken a professional approach, and that they are clear in terms of showing my journey and processes. I think this is evident on my blog also and I have managed to maintain a detailed account of my project as it has progressed.

Overall I feel that because this module has resonated the most with my personal interests, I have submerged myself in it alot more. I’m really glad that my creative process is starting to develop aswell in terms of using new medias, and think that it has had a really positive impact on my final images.
